Alternathistory is an independent publication about history, military technology, unrealized projects, and the roads history did not take.
We explore the past as it happened — and as it might have happened.
Alternathistory.net is the English-language edition of the Alternathistory project, which grew out of a long-established Russian-speaking community of authors and readers interested in history, technology, and alternative historical scenarios. For years, that community has discussed everything from ancient civilizations and medieval states to battleships, armored vehicles, aircraft, forgotten prototypes, and ambitious projects that never left the drawing board.
Alternathistory.net brings that experience to an international audience.
What We Write About
Our central subject is history, but we approach it from several directions.
We publish articles on military history, military technology, aviation, armored vehicles, naval history, ancient and medieval civilizations, engineering, forgotten and unrealized projects, and alternative history.
Some of our stories examine familiar events from an unfamiliar angle. Others deal with obscure machines, people, battles, or projects that have largely disappeared from popular memory.
And sometimes we ask a different kind of question:
What if?
What if a political decision had gone the other way? What if an experimental aircraft had entered production? Could a defeated state have survived? Could an ambitious military project actually have worked? At what point could a familiar historical outcome realistically have changed?
For us, alternative history is not simply about inventing another world. The most interesting scenarios begin with understanding the real one: its technology, economics, geography, politics, personalities, and limitations.
History Before Speculation
We make a clear distinction between factual history and alternative-history scenarios.
Articles dealing with real historical events are based on historical research and available sources. When we explore an alternative timeline, hypothetical military development, or fictional historical scenario, we identify it as such.
Our goal is not to blur the boundary between history and fiction. It is to use knowledge of real history to understand both what happened and what might realistically have happened instead.
This is also why technology occupies such an important place on Alternathistory.
A tank, aircraft, battleship, railway, engine, or weapon is never just a collection of specifications. Every machine exists within the industrial, economic, military, and political circumstances that created it. Understanding those circumstances often tells a much more interesting story than the specifications alone.
From Alternathistory.ru to Alternathistory.net
Alternathistory.net was created as the international English-language branch of Alternathistory.ru, our original Russian-language project and community.
The English edition is more than a mirror of the Russian site.
Our archive gives us access to years of accumulated articles, discussions, research, ideas, and alternative-history projects. Selected material from that archive may be translated, revised, updated, and adapted for English-speaking readers, while new articles are produced specifically for Alternathistory.net.
Our aim is to combine that accumulated experience with a new international community of readers and authors.
How We Work
We believe a good historical article should do more than repeat facts that can already be found elsewhere.
Whenever possible, we try to explain why something happened, why it mattered, what constraints shaped it, and what happened next.
For technical subjects, this means placing specifications and engineering decisions within their historical context. For military history, it means looking beyond the outcome of a battle to the logistics, technology, doctrine, people, and decisions behind it.
For alternative history, it means establishing a credible point of divergence and considering its consequences rather than simply assuming a desired outcome.
We use published historical research, contemporary documents, specialist literature, manufacturer and institutional information, and other relevant sources depending on the subject. Where appropriate, sources and further reading are identified in individual articles.

An Independent Project
Alternathistory is an independent publication.
We are interested in history because it is complicated. The same applies to technology and alternative history. Our purpose is not to force the past into a predetermined narrative, but to examine it, question it, and make complicated subjects understandable and interesting to read.
We welcome disagreement and informed criticism. Historical interpretation changes as new evidence appears, and even well-established conclusions can be debated. When factual errors are identified, we aim to correct them.
