The Wehrmacht’s “Boat Tractor”: A Strange Amphibious Vehicle That Tried to Combine a Tank and a Boat

The military technology of the Third Reich has long been shrouded in an almost mythological aura. People usually think of the “Tigers,” the Me 262 jet fighters, the giant railway guns, or the V-rockets. But among the German designs were also far stranger machines—so unusual that today they look almost like vehicles from an alternate history.

One such vehicle was the LWS—short for “land-water tractor.” In photographs, it looks almost comical: a tall hull like that of a river tugboat, a rounded bow, real portholes—and all of this mounted on tracks. It gives the impression that someone simply took a boat and mounted it on a tank chassis.

But behind this strange appearance lay a very serious concept. The Germans were trying to create a vehicle that could enter the water on its own, transport cargo, tow pontoons, assist with amphibious landings, and then come ashore and continue moving overland. For the late 1930s, the concept seemed both very bold and very logical.

The German army faced the same problem as all armies around the world—water

In the mid-1930s, the German high command was actively preparing for a future major war and was well aware of one unpleasant fact: an offensive almost always comes to a halt at a river.

Bridges are easy to destroy.
Pontoon crossings take time to set up.
Barges depend on water depth and the condition of the shore.
And conventional equipment becomes useless when faced with water.

This problem was particularly acute for the blitzkrieg. The German army relied on speed, deep penetrations, and a continuous offensive. Any delay at a crossing point disrupted the entire pace of the operation.

That is why, in 1935, the German Army Armaments Office (Heereswaffenamt) commissioned Rheinmetall-Borsig to develop a special tracked amphibious vehicle.

That’s how the Land-Wasser-Schlepper project came about.

The name itself perfectly captured the vehicle’s philosophy:
not a tank,
not an armored personnel carrier,
but specifically a “tractor” designed to operate between land and water.

A tracked boat

From an engineering standpoint, the LWS looked extremely unusual, even by interwar standards.

Instead of the usual armored hull, German engineers designed a full-fledged displacement hull of the boat type:
with a rounded bow,
high sides,
a deckhouse,
and even portholes.

On the water, the vehicle essentially functioned as a small boat.
On land, it functioned as a tracked tractor.

What’s particularly interesting is that the Germans did not develop a completely unique powerplant. The LWS was equipped with a Maybach HL 120 engine—the very same engine used in the Pz.Kpfw. III and Pz.Kpfw. IV tanks.

That was very typical of the German approach.

The Wehrmacht generally sought to standardize its equipment as much as possible:
identical engines,
similar components,
shared logistics,
and familiar mechanics for repair units.

This was extremely important for the army.

This was especially true in the context of a future major war, where equipment maintenance quickly became just as important as the vehicles’ performance specifications.

The main problem with LWS was immediately apparent

But even a first glance at the car revealed its main flaw.

The LWS turned out to be too high.

In the water, this was tolerable—the tall hull provided good buoyancy. But on land, the vehicle looked enormous and was a very conspicuous target. At the same time, it had almost no proper armor protection.

In fact, the LWS remained vulnerable even to:
— shrapnel,
— machine-gun fire,
— and light artillery.

And this is where the fundamental problem facing all early amphibians became apparent:
a machine that works well in water almost always requires compromises on land.

Especially if engineers are trying to combine the functions of a boat and a tractor at the same time.

The Germans weren’t building a tank, but a “ferry system”

It is very important to understand that the Land-Wasser-Schlepper was never intended to be a combat vehicle.

It lacked:
a turret,
a standard-issue cannon,
serious armor,
or a concept for direct combat engagement.

The role of LWS was completely different.

The vehicle was designed to:
— transport soldiers and cargo,
— tow pontoons,
— support amphibious operations,
— haul trailers ashore,
— and provide a crossing where there are no bridges or proper ports.

Working with the Kässbohrer amphibious trailer looked particularly interesting.

The Germans were, in fact, trying to create an entire modular system:
the LWS enters the water,
attaches a floating trailer,
transports the cargo,
pulls it ashore,
and then operates like a regular tractor-trailer.

Essentially, it was an attempt to turn the crossing of the water into a continuous process without having to wait for engineering units.

For the era of the Blitzkrieg, the idea seemed very modern.

“Sea Lion” Could Have Been LWS’s Moment in the Spotlight

The car’s big break came in 1940.

After the defeat of France, Germany began preparations for Operation Sea Lion—an invasion of Great Britain. And that’s when the LWS unexpectedly proved to be very useful.

An invasion across the English Channel required a huge number of:
— landing craft,
— tugs,
— pontoons,
— barges,
— and supply vehicles.

The LWS was ideal for coastal operations:
it could enter the water on its own,
tow watercraft,
come ashore,
and immediately continue moving over land.

On August 2, 1940, the vehicle was even demonstrated to Franz Halder, Chief of the General Staff of the Army, on the island of Sylt.

But the main problem became apparent fairly quickly.

Germany simply couldn’t keep up with producing such vehicles in the necessary quantities.

By the fall of 1940, there were only seven prototypes. That was enough for testing, but absolutely not enough for a full-scale invasion.

And then the Battle of Britain completely changed the situation.

Following the Luftwaffe’s failure, Operation Sea Lion gradually petered out—and with it, the main impetus for the mass production of LWS vanished.

The car still managed to compete

Despite being produced in only a small number, the Land-Wasser-Schlepper was still used in actual operations.

In the fall of 1941, amphibious vehicles were used during the capture of the Moonsund Islands in the Baltic Sea. There, the vehicle proved particularly useful due to its ability to operate between the islands and land on unfortified shores.

Some of the vehicles also ended up:
— with the engineering units of the Eastern Front,
— in the Mediterranean,
— and one was even used by the Kriegsmarine.

In fact, for such a rare piece of equipment, the LWS lasted a surprisingly long time.

Some of the vehicles remained in service almost until the very end of the war.

LWS II: The Germans Tried to Correct Their Mistakes

It quickly became clear that the first LWS was too vulnerable.

Therefore, in 1941, the Germans began developing a new version—the LWS II.

And that’s when the project became much more serious.

The Pz.Kpfw. IV tank chassis served as the basis, and the concept itself began to take the form of a sort of floating ferry for heavy equipment.

Two LWS II vehicles were to move on either side of a special platform and hold it between them. The plan was to load the following onto such a platform:
— tanks,
— artillery,
— or other cargo weighing up to 24 metric tons.

In fact, the Germans were attempting to develop a new-generation mobile amphibious crossing.

But harsh reality intervened once again.

Tests showed that the system lacked sufficient power—especially when pulling a heavy platform out of the water and onto shore. As a result, the program was shut down as early as 1942.

A Car That Came Too Soon

There is another particularly interesting aspect to the entire history of the Land-Wasser-Schlepper.

Today, ideas like these no longer seem so strange.

Modern armies make extensive use of:
— amphibious transporters,
— engineering vehicles,
— troop-landing platforms,
— and hybrid vehicles designed to operate both on land and in water.

But in the late 1930s, LWS turned out to be too unconventional for its time.

It was:
— complex,
— expensive,
— produced in small batches,
— too tall,
— and too specialized for mass production.

And most importantly, the very operation for which it was created has disappeared.

As a result, the Land-Wasser-Schlepper never became a significant vehicle of World War II.

But it remains a fascinating example of how engineers of the Blitzkrieg era tried to solve one very simple problem:
how to help the army move forward when they encountered water again.

And perhaps that is precisely why this strange German “boat tractor” is remembered today far more often than many of the much more common vehicles of that war.
