EVIO, in partnership with Boeing, is launching production of a prototype of the EVIO 810 hybrid regional passenger aircraft. This was announced on December 11, 2025, in a press release by EVIO, a “young” developer of hybrid-electric aircraft.
It is noted that the company already has a preliminary contract in its order book for the delivery of 450 EVIO 810 aircraft. This regional aircraft, developed from the ground up with a passenger capacity of up to 76, features a hybrid-electric design. Delivery to customers and the entry into service of the EVIO 810 are scheduled for the early 2030s.
The hybrid powerplant architecture is based on Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6E engines, which is a significant advantage for a startup seeking certification for an entirely new aircraft.
It is reported that work on this behemoth was carried out over several years under strict secrecy. According to an EVIO press release, in 2023 the company entered into two major agreements with airlines, which signed preliminary agreements for the delivery of a total of 250 aircraft, as well as options for an additional 200 units.
EVIO has not disclosed which airline is the customer for its EVIO 810 hybrid regional jets. However, the company emphasizes that these are fairly large airlines with extensive regional networks.
The EVIO 810 aircraft is designed to operate in both all-electric and hybrid-electric modes. The aircraft can fly on battery power only for short distances. However, for longer flights, it can switch to hybrid mode while in flight.
EVIO states that the goal of developing this aircraft is to provide regional airlines with lower operating costs, as regional operators are increasingly facing rising maintenance costs for their aging turboprop and turbofan regional aircraft.
It is worth noting that in 2023, Boeing acquired a stake in EVIO and is providing engineering support. The financial terms and other details of this transaction have not been disclosed.
In addition to the passenger version of the EVIO 810, EVIO also plans to produce cargo and military variants of the aircraft based on this model. EVIO stated that the aircraft was originally designed with autonomous flight capabilities in mind, although no timeline has yet been announced for the implementation of this feature.
EVIO is confident that the regional market has long been in need of a new player. It is noted that, according to the developer’s analysis, more than 5,000 regional aircraft will need to be replaced over the next 20 years, and more than 2,600 have already been retired over the past 5 years. Meanwhile, only about 750 new aircraft have been put into service during this period, leading to a reduction in airline fleets and a decrease in the number of modern regional aircraft options.
EVIO, a new aircraft manufacturing company, was founded in 2019 and operates in both Canada and the United States. Its main aircraft development hub is in Montreal.
EVIO is led by CEO Michael Derman and CTO Luke Van Bavel. EVIO’s board of directors includes seasoned veterans of the aerospace industry—Rob Dewar, former senior vice president at Airbus who oversaw the CSeries/A220 program, and former Lockheed Martin executive Frank Cappuccio, who led the Skunk Works advanced development division and played a central role in the F-35 program.
As the developer emphasized, the presence of experienced specialists lends EVIO credibility in a market where developing aircraft from scratch requires extensive program management experience and long-term financing.
