Airbus U145: A Pilotless Helicopter. Europeans Are Turning the Tried-and-True H145 Into an Autonomous Air Freighter

While most drone developers are focusing on small, aircraft-style models, Airbus has decided to take a different approach. At the ILA Berlin 2026 airshow, the European conglomerate unveiled the U145—a fully unmanned version of one of the world’s most popular light helicopters, the H145. At first glance, the new model looks like just another experiment with autonomous technologies. However, in reality, Airbus is demonstrating what the transport helicopter of the future could look like.

The new aircraft is being developed not as a technology demonstrator, but as a fully-fledged operational aircraft for civilian and military operators. Airbus expects the U145 to be capable of delivering cargo, conducting reconnaissance missions, providing support in disaster zones, and even serving as a carrier for smaller drones. The first flight is scheduled for late 2026, and the aircraft is expected to enter service at the beginning of the next decade.

A drone was built from a proven H145

The main feature of the project is that Airbus did not design a new aircraft from scratch.

The U145 is based on the well-known H145—one of the most widely used twin-engine helicopters in its class. To date, the H145 family comprises more than 1,800 helicopters, and their total flight hours have exceeded 8.5 million. The helicopter is used by police, rescue services, the military, and commercial operators around the world.

For Airbus, this approach seems quite logical. Instead of spending years developing a new aircraft, the engineers were provided with a ready-made platform with well-documented performance characteristics and a vast amount of operational data.

However, the U145 looks noticeably different from its manned predecessor.

The most unusual thing is the lack of a cab

If you look closely at the model shown here, the main difference becomes obvious: the helicopter no longer has a traditional cockpit.

In fact, the entire front section has been redesigned. The glass panel has been replaced by a cargo compartment featuring an integrated front door and a folding loading ramp. This design maximizes the use of interior space for transporting cargo.

The equipment will be controlled by a fully autonomous system.

To this end, the U145 will be equipped with a suite of sensors, computing systems, and artificial intelligence algorithms that will enable it to take off, fly along a route, and land autonomously. Airbus emphasizes that the aircraft is being designed specifically as a fully autonomous aircraft, rather than as a remotely piloted helicopter.

An Air Freighter for the Military and the Civilian Sector

The U145 was originally designed as an unmanned transport helicopter.

Unlike most modern cargo drones, this is a vehicle with a maximum takeoff weight of about 3,800 kilograms. By comparison, this is several times greater than the weight of most existing heavy vertical-takeoff drones.

Airbus is considering a wide range of missions for the new aircraft.

In the civilian sector, this may include delivering cargo to hard-to-reach areas, responding to natural disasters, supplying remote locations, and supporting rescue operations.

The military sees even more potential. The U145 can be used to resupply frontline units, evacuate cargo from dangerous areas, conduct reconnaissance and surveillance, and even serve as a sort of “mother ship” for launching smaller drones. Airbus is already collaborating with MBDA to develop such concepts.

Why Is Airbus Focusing on Helicopters?

Interestingly, this is already Airbus’s second project aimed at converting a manned helicopter into an unmanned one.

The company had previously developed the VSR700 based on the lightweight Cabri G2 helicopter. Now it’s time for a significantly larger aircraft.

The reason for this approach is quite simple.

Airplanes and multicopters are well-suited for certain tasks, but helicopters remain virtually irreplaceable when vertical takeoff, hovering, cargo delivery to confined spaces, or operations without existing infrastructure are required.

That is precisely why militaries around the world continue to seek ways to preserve the advantages of helicopters while eliminating their main limitation—the need to put the crew at risk.

The U145 is, in fact, an attempt to solve this problem.

The First Step Toward Unmanned Transport Helicopters

The project is currently in the early stages of development.

The first flight is scheduled for late 2026 and will take place with a safety pilot on board. After that, an extended testing cycle of the autonomous systems will begin. If the program proceeds according to schedule, the U145 could enter service as early as the beginning of the 2030s.

But even now, it’s clear that Airbus is focusing on a sector that will see particularly rapid growth in the coming years.

While drones were previously associated mainly with reconnaissance and strike missions, the largest aircraft manufacturers are now beginning to apply autonomous technologies to commercial aviation. And it is quite possible that in ten years, an unmanned cargo helicopter will be as commonplace as an attack drone is today.
