I recently published an article about Turkey’s future MUGEM-class aircraft carrier, which apparently has already been laid down, although it hasn’t been officially named yet. As it turns out, this isn’t the only new ship in Turkey’s future “imperial” fleet. Alongside the aircraft carrier, a destroyer was also laid down, which will undoubtedly become the second most important ship in Turkey’s future aircraft carrier strike group (ACSG). As part of the final phase of Turkey’s MILGEM program, in July 2017 the Turkish Navy launched the TF-2000 project to meet its need for destroyers specializing in air defense. The TF-2000 destroyers will be capable of detecting guided and ballistic missiles at various altitudes and neutralizing non-ballistic threats.
The designed displacement of these destroyers will be 8,300 metric tons, making them the largest ships built under the MILGEM program. Their dimensions will be as follows:
- 149 meters long,
- 21.5 meters wide,
- a draft of 5.75 meters.
The main propulsion system consists of two gas turbines and two diesel engines in a CODOG configuration, which will enable the vessel to reach speeds of over 26 knots.
The TF-2000 will be equipped with sufficiently powerful armament to ensure its effectiveness under any conditions. Its main artillery caliber will be a 127-mm gun capable of engaging both naval and land targets with equal effectiveness. As for missile armament, the ships will be equipped with the Turkish MİDLAS universal vertical launch system, which can hold up to 96 missiles and is designed to accommodate missile systems of various classes.
The missiles launched from the MİDLAS include Turkish anti-aircraft missiles—possibly the SIPER systems—as well as the advanced GEZGİN cruise missiles designed to engage ground targets. In addition, the destroyer will be equipped with 16 ATMACA anti-ship missiles to engage both naval and coastal targets.
For self-defense, the ship is scheduled to be equipped with a short-range air defense system—either the Levent from Roketsan or the Göksur from Aselsan—as well as a 35-mm Gökdeniz artillery system. As for torpedo armament, the destroyer will be equipped with Aselsan ORKA 324-mm torpedoes to counter submarine threats. In addition to these systems, the ship will be equipped with stabilized, remotely controlled artillery modules, such as the Aselsan STAMP and/or STOP, providing precise and flexible firepower against the enemy.
The primary radar system for detecting air targets will be the CAFRAD system, featuring fixed gallium nitride antennas capable of tracking more than 2,000 targets within a 450-kilometer radius. The destroyer will also be equipped with an LPI radar for navigation, optical fire control systems, and an integrated hydroacoustic system with a bow-mounted and towed sonar (Aselsan Düfas), which will be synchronized with the ADVENT fire control system.
