China's Drone Warfare of the Future: What Is the FK-3000 Anti-Aircraft Missile and Gun System?

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is prioritizing the improvement of its air defense system by adopting various types of air defense systems. Recent reports have emerged regarding the possible introduction of fundamentally new missile-and-gun systems into the arsenal of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Previously, similar systems were offered for export; now, this missile-gun system is entering service with the Chinese military.

Introducing a New Product

About three years ago, at the Airshow China 2022 exhibition, the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) unveiled for the first time its latest development in the field of air defense—a self-propelled anti-aircraft missile and gun system designated the FK-3000.

The exhibition booth featured a full-scale prototype in a combat-ready configuration, as well as individual components of the system. In addition, the system’s key features, technical specifications, and intended use were presented. The developers stated that the ZRPK is designed to engage a wide range of air targets at close and short ranges. To increase operational flexibility, the system is equipped with a small-caliber cannon and two types of missiles.

The FK-3000 was originally developed for sale abroad. During the exhibition, CASIC Corporation hoped to attract potential buyers and secure lucrative contracts. However, as far as is known, these plans were not successful, and the new air defense missile system was not exported.

The FK-3000 system has been showcased on numerous occasions at subsequent exhibitions. It recently attracted media attention once again, this time in connection with its adoption into service.

Preparations for the parade

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is currently preparing for a military parade commemorating the end of World War II, which will take place on September 3. Training exercises involving personnel and various types of military equipment are underway in Beijing. During these exercises, new models of weapons from various categories were spotted.

The mechanized column for the parade includes FK-3000 air defense missile systems. Vehicles of this type have been spotted on the streets of Beijing. Photos of the systems taken during rehearsals have been made publicly available. In some photos, the systems are shown in full detail; in others, their weapons are concealed under protective covers.

The system’s participation in the parade indicates that the new air defense missile system has been adopted by the PLA. However, detailed information on this is not yet available. It is not even known under what designation the systems will be deployed. The vehicles participating in the parade bear the designations FK331 and FK364, but these are most likely the tactical numbers of specific combat units.

Nevertheless, all the information should be released shortly; there is less than a week left until the parade. It cannot be ruled out that the new details will be published even sooner. Most of the information about the FK-3000 was disclosed back in 2022.

Description of the Complex

The FK-3000 is a self-propelled, wheeled, close-in/short-range anti-aircraft missile and gun system. It is designed to intercept a wide range of aerial targets, including unmanned aerial vehicles and precision-guided munitions. The system is expected to be used to reinforce military air defense forces.

The system is mounted on a Shaanxi SX2220 chassis—a three-axle, all-wheel-drive vehicle with a cab-over-engine design that offers excellent off-road capability. When configured as an air defense system, the vehicle is equipped with an armored two-row cab and an additional protective shield behind it. At the rear of the vehicle, above the rear axles, there is a platform for the combat module.

The combat module consists of a rotating platform equipped with weapons and other equipment. An optoelectronic station and a guidance radar are located at the front of the module. Behind them is a swing-mounted artillery mount with a cannon. At the rear of the module is a support structure with a surveillance radar. Two oscillating launchers are positioned on either side of the cannon and the radar.

The FK-3000 is equipped with a combined missile-and-cannon armament system. A 30-mm automatic cannon from one of the production models is mounted on a swing-type mount. The cannon is aimed by rotating the entire module using the standard optoelectronic station. Its effective firing range is several kilometers.

Each of the two launchers has 12 slots for transport-launch containers holding missiles. According to available data, two types of guided missiles have been developed for the FK-3000, differing in size and performance characteristics. The larger missile occupies the entire available space, while the smaller guided missile uses a container with a cross-section four times smaller.

Each launcher can carry up to 12 larger missiles or up to 48 smaller missiles. A mixed payload was demonstrated at the exhibition and during parade rehearsals—each of the swiveling launchers carried missiles of its own type.

The appearance and specifications of the FK-3000’s guided missiles are not yet known. They are likely small solid-fuel missiles with either homing or radio-command guidance. The launch range of the larger missile reaches 12 km. Accordingly, the smaller missile has a range of only a few kilometers.

The FK-3000 Air Defense System is equipped with its own radar and optical sensors for airspace surveillance, target tracking, and fire control. The system can operate autonomously or receive target data from external sources. In addition, the combat vehicle is capable of remotely controlling one or two similar systems. In this case, the controlled air defense systems operate without crews.

Current Challenges

According to the developer, the FK-3000 air defense missile system was designed to engage a wide range of aerial targets. Particular attention was paid to modern threats, such as unmanned aerial vehicles and high-precision weapons. A number of features of the new system are specifically designed to counter such targets.

The FK-3000 is effectively equipped with three types of weapons—a cannon and two missile models with different characteristics. This creates a sort of layered interception system. At ranges of up to 10–12 km, targets are to be engaged by larger missiles, after which smaller surface-to-air missiles take over. If a target breaks through the missile layers, the 30-mm cannon engages it at ranges of up to several kilometers.

This architecture of the weapons system increases the likelihood of successfully intercepting all potential targets and improves the protection of the designated area. In addition, the system takes into account the characteristics of modern threats, which enhances its effectiveness.

It is clear that large targets, such as airplanes, helicopters, or full-size UAVs, can be detected at considerable distances. To counter them, a large air-to-air missile with a range of 12 km is used. Given the specific nature of air raid operations and the functioning of military air defense systems, a warhead load of 12 missiles is sufficient to accomplish typical missions.

Small UAVs, on the other hand, are more difficult to detect. Their detection range is significantly shorter, requiring a faster response. At the same time, a long flight range is not necessary. The solution to all these problems should be a compact missile with limited flight characteristics, allowing for a large payload.

Thus, in the anticipated situations and scenarios, the FK-3000 must be capable of successfully engaging small numbers of aircraft or large UAVs, as well as being able to neutralize dozens of small drones or guided munitions. At the same time, the air defense system can operate autonomously or interact with similar systems, including controlling them.

Theory and Practice

In theory, the new Chinese FK-3000 air defense system looks quite interesting. In terms of its basic concepts and design, it resembles the latest versions of the Russian “Pantsir” system, which also feature new, compact missiles. At the same time, the systems differ significantly in their performance characteristics. The Russian system has longer-range missiles and carries more powerful artillery weapons.

It appears that the Chinese air defense missile system has recently caught the attention of the People’s Liberation Army. As a result, it underwent the necessary tests and demonstrated its capabilities. The military was satisfied with the test results, and the system was recommended for adoption. Now, the PLA has deemed it necessary to showcase it at a parade.
